World numbers 1 have fallen !

Opening of quarter-finals day, Chinese mixed double ZHENG Si Wei/HUANG Ya Qiong, world numbers one and defending champions here in France are facing the Koreans KIM Won Ho/JEONG Na Eun (n°7). A very tight game and a first surprise of the day as the outsiders kicked out the last winner of the tournament (23/21 23/21).

First set is quite close, the Korean pair really seems to be up to the challenge. No one really succeeds to take the edge and world numbers one only lead 11/9 at the break. JEONG and KIM manage to stay close and even come back in the money time to put the Chinese under pressure. 21-all, public is holding its breath. Fighting till the end, Koreans create a first sensation winning the first set 23/21.

Threatened after they lost the first set, ZHENG and HUANG are making more and more errors and let their opponents fly away to the semi-finals. Usually calm, the Chinese pair is getting nervous, a proof that the beast is wounded. Way behind at the break, they don’t seem able to develop their game. Dominated at every level, they go up to an 8 points difference that they miraculously manage to close up. Again, everything is going down to the money time. After having saved several match points, they lose in two breathtaking sets (21/23 21/23).

JEONG Na Eun reacted after the victory: “Around June or July, Kim had an injury and could not participate in tournament, we took each tournament one at a time with a cool/cautious and strong-hunger approach. Coming up to QF at the French Open, it was daunting to face the world's top mixed doubles (Zheng and Huang) and that means we had to rise up to the challenge and give our best and things turned out well. Wish to thank coach and to my partner Kim.” (credits: BWF)

In the semis, Koreans will face the last Chinese pair left: JIANG/WEI (n°6).
