MD : Let the show begins !
The Indonesian strength and the French courage
The Indonesian Fajar ALFIAN and Muhammad Rian ADRIANTO (N.7) played a strong game against Alexander DUNN and Adam HALL (N.37). The Scottish never found a way to disturb the 2019 World Championship Bronze Medal pair. Bottom line : 21/14 21/14.
This game was followed by the one of the POPOV brothers who were facing the young Danish Daniel LUNDGAARD / Mathias THYRRI (N.47). Despite leading at the first set interlude, the POPOVs lost the first set 21/17. The second set was quite the opposite since the Danish were always a few points ahead but have been caught up by the brothers in money time. After a match point saved, the French took the advantage 23/21. Full of confidence, they won the last set 21/10. After the match, the brothers confessed that “the defense we did at 20-20 was the turning point. After that, we took a serious mental advantage”.
The Malaysian show
Great show on court number 2 where two Malaysian pairs were facing each other. “On my right ONG Yew Sin and TEO Ee Yi (N.16) and on my left GOH Sze Fei and Nur IZZUDIN (N.19)”. The teams are close in term of world ranking but also in term of badminton level. As a result, the match was also a close one. 24/22 in favor of GOH/IZZUDDIN for the first. They had two match point opportunities in the second one (20/18) but ONG and TEO found the resources to score 4 points in a row and won the set 22/20, then the following one 21/17 to finally qualify to round 2.
The English surprise
English sensation on court number 3 where Callum HEMMING and Steven STALLWOOD (N.74) beat Ruben JILLE and Tier Van Der LECQ (N.52). A well-managed first set 21/13 and a very tight second one 24/22. After the match the winners gave us some explanations : “In the first set we were more clinical. We took advantage of the back shots. In the second set they pushed up a lot more. It was more a 50-50 probability to win the rallies”.
Mark LAMSFUSS / Marvin SEIDEL (N.17, Germany) were challenged by a very new pair TAN Kian Meng / TAN Wee Kiong (N.327, Malaysia). The vice European champions experience of playing together has lead them to victory despite a close first set : 21/18 21/15. After the match, Marvin Seidel seemed satisfied about the work done on court : “We always like to come here. It is a pleasure to play in this hall. I think today we played great tactics. We were focused on what we had to do. Sometimes, they had some problems about who had to take the shuttle. We are happy they played the Dutch Open so that we can have some videos to rely on.
