XD – FINAL : Zheng/Huang failed to create French Open history

To date, no Mixed double pair has won two times in a row here in Paris at the French Open. Indonesia’s Jordan/Oktavianti prevented the defending champion Zheng/Huang to win the Eiffel Tower French trophy and change the cursed statistics at the French Open 2019 Edition.

Numbers as signs

First sign. In the Head-to-head the Chinese lead 6-1. That sounded like a crushing record with quite no chance for Indonesian pair. But the last encounter which took place last week in Odense at the Danish Open was in favor of the Indonesian who defeated the world number 1 pair in 3 games 18-21 21-16 22-20.

Second sign. The Chinese pair, launched at the end of 2017, was about to play in Paris its 23rd final over 29 tournaments. But in the sport world the number 23 and Jordan name makes a strong association. Would Praveen Jordan associated with Melati Daeva Oktavianti be strong enough to overcome the reigning world champions?

Third sign. The French Open is the 4th HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament of the year before the China Open that will start in 2 weeks. Defeated in second round of the Malaysia Open in April. Runners-up in July at the Japan Open, they won the Danish Open, especially with impressive victories over the first-seeded Zeng/Huang in quarterfinal as mentioned above and over the second-seeded Wang/Huang in final. Their confidence was for sure boosted up when entering the court for the mixed doubles final of a Super 750 in Paris today.

French Open title transferred from Zheng/Huang to Jordan/Oktavianti

The packed crowd witnessed an opening game controlled by the Zheng/Huang. After being led 8-2, the Indonesians made a remarkable comeback and the scoreboard then displayed 11-10 at the mid-game interval. The Chinese pushed to uncomfortable defensive situations took on the game 21-18.

With strong and accurate shots from Jordan as well as excellent Oktavianti front court game, the Indonesians won the second game 21-16.

In a tight deciding game, they confirmed they can be part of the top 5 mixed double pairs. Zheng/Huang saved 3 match points but Jordan/Oktavianti, solid and confident, eventually defeated their opponents 18-21 21-16 22-10.

The Indonesians are now the French Open defending who will claim the title next wear.
