FINALS - MD : Upset for the top ranked team

It’s the last day here in Coubertin. The best players in the world faced each other for the ultimate meeting to win the title ! First surprise of the day in men’s doubles : the young Chinese didn’t allow the world no 1 to win their 9Th title of the year.

The famous pair (GIDEON/SUKAMULJO) has been defeated by the Chinese pair (HAN/ZHOU) in the final of the Men’s doubles draw this afternoon. The match began with some hesitations and easy mistakes from both pairs. The Chinese players seemed to lead the game in the first set and the Indonesians seemed to be distracted. Despite this, they managed to stick to the score, 11-10 at the break. The Chinese pair gave an amazing level of play to resist to the powerful smashes of the world no 1 pair. The 1st game was very tight until the very end and the Chinese finally won it 23-11.

Quick reaction in the second game

The Indonesian players quickly reacted and raised their level of badminton during the first half of the second game. They quickly build themselves a comfortable lead (9-1). The world no 1 managed to keep this level to maintain a 10 points-lead until the end of the 2nd game (21-8). They seemed to use their experience comparing to the twenty-year-old Chinese boys who are still quite young in the tour.

China power

The 3rd game was disputed as expected. The Chinese showed an amazing level of play and instil doubt in their opponent’s mind. They finally beat the Indonesians 23-21 8-21 21-17 and win their first major title.

This result is clearcly the upset of the day so far, and let’s note that we have already a similar match a month ago during the China Super 1000 : the young Chinese beat the world ranked no 1 in semi-finals.

Result :
Yonex IFB 2018 – Men's Doubles : HAN Chengkai / ZHOU Haodong (China) beat Marcus Fernaldi GIDEON / Kevin Sanjaya SUKAMULJO (Indonesia) 21-23 21-8 17-21
