First round WS : great matches for the beginning of the tournament

For the first round in women's singles, the spectators could witness very high level matches during the whole day. But not many surprises.

The women’s singles draw promises a very interesting competition, even if there were not many surprises during this first round.

The first match opposed Bingjao (number 7 seed) to Fitriani from Indonesia. Bingjao started making many direct faults in the first set and was led by the Indonesian but she seemed to have found her right pace after the 12th point. The second set was tight but Binjiao won the match in two sets as expected. Final score : 17-21 19-21.

Michelle Li from Canada was opposed to Yamaguchi (number 2 seed) so the match went the way it was expected. The final score is 21-17 21-12. Michelle explained after the match : « I did my best but I injured my back a little bit before. Towards the end, I was not able to keep up with her pace anymore. » The Canadian is planning on working hard and focusing on her own game.

The vice Olympic Champion in women’s singles Sindhu Pusarla was playing against the American Beiwen Zhang, the same one who beat her during the Denmark Open last week. Sindhu got the victory pretty easily in two games 21-17 21-8. She explained that mental strength is a key part of her game : « I had to just be there, mentally and physically it’s very important to be on the court. If anything is missing it will make a huge difference. » Sindhu is seeded number 3 and she is one of the favorite for the title this year !
